Our Guide To Creating A Healthy Skincare Routine | Beauty Emporium

What’s Your Skin Type?
You’ve heard the the hype about normal, oily, dry, combination, or sensitive skin types. But which one do you have? Your skin type can change with age and your environment. Younger people are more likely than older people to have a normal skin type, and as you age your skin can become dryer. Pollution, climate and work stress can also reek havoc on the health of your skin.

Your skin type is dependent on a few main factors:
- How much water is in your skin, which affects comfort and elasticity
- How oily your skin is, which affects softness
- How sensitive your skin is

Identifying a NORMAL SKIN Type
Not too dry and not too oily, normal skin has:
      - No blemishes or few skin imperfections
      - No severe sensitivity
      - Barely visible pores
      - A radiant complexion

      Identifying a COMBINATION SKIN Type
Your skin can be dry or normal in some areas and oily in others, such as the T-zone (forehead, chin and nose). Many people have this type. It may need slightly different care in different areas.

      Combination skin can have:
          - Enlarged pores
          - Blackheads
          - Shiny skin around T-zones
          - Normal to dry cheeks

            Identifying a DRY SKIN Type
            You skin may have:
                - Few visible pores
                - Dull, rough complexion
                - Red or flaky patches
                - Your skin is less elastic
                - More visible lines

Dry skin can crack, peel, or become itchy, irritated, or inflamed. If it’s very dry, it can become rough and scaly, especially on the backs of your hands, arms and legs.

Dry skin may be caused or made worse by:
                    - Your genes a.k.a. your DNA
                    - Aging or hormonal changes
                    - Weather such as wind, hot sun or cold climates
                    - Ultraviolet (UV) radiation
                    - Indoor heating
                    - Long, hot showers and baths
                    - Ingredients in soaps, cosmetics or cleansers
                    - Medications

Our tips to help dry skin:
                        - Shorter showers and baths, no more than once daily
                        - Use mild, gentle soaps or cleansers
                        - Don't scrub while bathing or drying
                        - Smooth on a rich moisturiser after bathing. Ointments and creams may work better than lotions for dry skin. Reapply as needed throughout the day
                        - Use a humidifier, and don't let indoor temperatures get too hot
                        - Wear gloves when using cleaning agents, solvents, or household detergents

                        Identifying an OILY SKIN Type

                        You may have:
                        - Enlarged visible pores
                        - Dull or shiny, thick and pale skin complexion
                        - Blackheads, pimples or other blemishes

Your skin oiliness can change depending upon the time of year or the weather.
Things that can cause or worsen it include:

                        - Puberty or other hormonal imbalances
                        - Stress
                        - Heat or too much humidity

Our tips to help oily skin:

                        - Wash no more than twice a day or after you sweat a lot
                        - Use gentle cleansers and don't scrub
                        - Don't pick or squeeze pimples as they'll take longer to heal or cause scars
                        - Look for the word noncomedogenic on skin care products and cosmetics. This means it won’t clog pores.

                        Identifying a SENSITIVE SKIN Type

                        It can show up as:

                        - Redness
                        - Itching
                        - Burning
                        - Dryness

If your skin is sensitive, try to find out what your triggers are so you can avoid them. There are many possible reasons, including allergies and climate conditions but often it's in response to an ingredient in a particular skin care product, so always patch test new products before using.
